Topic: Grass New To Lake

Hey everyone,
In the past year or so the lake I fish has really took off with hydrilla, it is also a dominanted with spotted bass. How do you go about fishing this grass and how do spots relate to grass?

Thanks,

Derek

Topic: Humminbird Question

Hey guys I recently switched from Lowrance to a Humminbird Solix. The internal memory is full and my track is not being recorded anymore. Is there a way (other than deleting my current track) to keep adding to my tracks? I really liked the feature on Lowrance with having as many trails as you want. I have not added a sd or mapping card yet.

Hey guys is there ever a time where you do not crank the bottom? If so, what type a Crankbait are you using , time of year and what kind of situation is it?

I ask this question with leaving smallmouth out of it and also when the fish are just super aggressive.

Thanks,

Derek

Wow I was very impressed with Jeff Kriets class! It gave me the confidence to slow down during the winter. I am guilty of fishing to fast and giving up on a spot in the winter.
Thanks Jeff!!

I agree, maybe you could have Chad Smith do seminar or even be featured as a guest on the next Bass University Live show. He seems to be one of the most consistent/ successful co angler out there.

I personally like power pro original moss green 50lb. I keep a extra wide permant marker in the boat with a notch cut out on the tip of the mark. Once my line starts to fade I will color about 10 to 15 ft of line. Sunline makes a “frogging and flipping “ braid that is blue, black and I think a little bit of white. I have tried it but I did not notice an increase in bites so I went back to power pro original bc I like the way it cast and I prefer the moss green color better.

Thanks Pete, I am thinking about adding one to the bow with my Humminbird helix. Any suggestions on the best bang for your buck panoptix setup? Do you need to purchase any additional transducer or does everything you need comes with the unit?

Topic: Wake bait Tips

Hey guys I watched Scott Suggs video on wake baits and I have a question about it. Any tips on retrieve for waking a red fin? I am using 17 lb mono and with my rod tip high and a slow retrieve but the bait still try’s to dive under the surface. I have to basically crawl it and shake the bait to get to wake.

Most legitimate swimjigs (IMO) will have a 30 degree bend hook and most grass jig will have just a straight hook with no bend. From what I have seen, a 30 degree bend vertical hook is the best hook for a swim jig, it comes through grass nicely and over wood good. I tend to stay away from horizontal hook swim-jigs. But to answer your question I guess a grass jig could
work as a swim jig in open water or around grass, I would be careful around brush/wood.

No problem! A swim jig is my favorite bait of all time. Bill Lowen has a good seminar on swim jigs you should check out https://bassu.tv/bass-fishing-video/fishing-swim-jigs-bill-lowen . It’s a very detail technique. From the rod, reel, line to the jig itself. Very similar to how technical frog fishing can be.

I remember Greg Hackney fishing I think a 1 oz. Hack Attack flippin jig with a rodent rig as a trailer to win a Elite tournament on Texoma a couple years ago. It was post spawn and flooded conditions. Others guys were using a a lighter 3/8 slither rig and Greg won it by reaction on that big jig.

Hey Pete what is your setup for a weightless Senko?

Hey guys what are some of your favorite weighted wacky worm hooks for around brush and cover?

Can’t go wrong with 50lb. power pro in moss green color.

Thanks Pete! I agree with you on the lighter wire hook for long cast for good hook penetration. But don’t forget about the beefy swim jigs either for thick heavy cover. Such as the hack attack swim jig https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Strike_King_Hack_Attack_Heavy_Cover_Swim_Jig/descpage-SKHASJ.html or the 6th Sense Divine Braid Swim Jig https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/6th_Sense_Divine_Braid_Swim_Jig/descpage-6DBRD.html#customer_reviews both of these are great in thick heavy cover where braided line is required. IMO there are many different styles of swim jig fishing and all have there time and place. My favorite way to fish a swim jig is skipping under over hanging trees with a stout beefy swim jig with either a rage craw or the new spicy beaver by reaction innovations.

For the rod I would recommend the Megabass Levante Diablo Spec. Its a little more than you want to spend but I feel you could make up for it on the reel bc there are a lot of good reels out there for around $100

Here is the rod:

https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Megabass_2019_Levante_Casting_Rods/descpage-MBLCRD.html

Here is the reel I would recommend :

https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_Fuego_CT_Casting_Reel/descpage-FCTX.html

I wouldn’t go higher than a 7.3 on the gear ratio.

I would recommend throwing 15 lb floro and keep all your hooks on the lighter size. Also keep you drag fairly tight when throwing the single hook baits and a little looser when throwing anything with trebles.

Hope this helps!

Most all 1.5 style Crankbaits are good now days (strike king, lucky craft and 6th sense are my personal favorite) any of these would be great for fishing from the bank. If I was fishing from the bank with a Crankbait it I would also be throwing a Mann’s baby 1 minus or the strike king shallow 1.5. These baits run very shallow and would be good for paralleling the bank.

Here are links to these baits.

I would also buy a couple of balsa Crankbaits to. Balsa is very buoyant and deflects off wood great. A general rule is : balsa Crankbaits around wood and plastics Crankbaits (1.5) around rocks and grass.

Also check out these seminars by two great squarebillers
