Grass New To Lake

Derek - graduate

Hey everyone,
In the past year or so the lake I fish has really took off with hydrilla, it is also a dominanted with spotted bass. How do you go about fishing this grass and how do spots relate to grass?

Thanks,

Derek

Hey Derek, I have not dealt with a lake like this that is dominated with spots. In my experience, when grass takes over a lake its just a matter of time until grass patterns start to dominate the fishing. Often a lake can explode with more and bigger bass when the grass comes. I'll reach out to our Pros on this question for more details.

I'm experiencing this at Lake Norman right now. So far my experience has been that I'm able to get away with more aggressive lures than I would normally use to catch spots in the areas with the grass. Recently I caught several fish around grassy docks with a chatterbait where the visibility was probably 6-10ft. In the past, I've had little luck in that same area with any power fishing technique, and had only had success with dropshots, shakey heads and finesse swimbaits.

Hey Derek,

Find harder bottom areas, similar to what Smallmouth would use... If you have mapping, look for steeper contour lines (closer together) and look for bait (eyes and sonar). If you find these areas, you’ll find some bass, especially in summer and winter. Don’t forget to adjust your location based upon the general seasonal pattern, as the fish will use flatter areas around these steeper breaks adjacent to grass (spring, fall, and during transitional periods). Once you find the location, work through some baits and presentations to see what’s most efficient, and fine-tune from there. You’ll do more than fine????????

Peace
