I've had tremendous success throwing a 1 - 2.5 square bill when the fish are chasing bait at or near the surface. This works best for me when the fish are staying up for a period of time while busting the top.

In reading tons of guide reports I learned most recommended throwing a jig in search of lunker and black/blue was the best color. That's when I started throwing a jig myself, built my confidence in it's ability to catch fish and landed my PB on one.

13.06 largemouth on a custom tied 3/4 oz. football head jig by Spirit Jigs in black and blue with a splash of purple. Trailer was a Bass Assassin craw in purple with blue flake. My rod was a 7’ Duckett Micro Magic m/h fast, Seaguar Red Label 20 lb fluorocarbon for line with a Lews Mark Rose signature series reel. I was fish just outside the grass when I hooked her.

How much of a change does a body of water have to go through to cause a substantial change in bass as far as what kind of structure they’re holding or location in the lake?

Lot’s of retirees that bass fishing and there’s nothing like gaining knowledge from an elder. You can also check out the oldest guides in your area and book a trip with one. It’s good to know the way they prefer to fish and book a trip with those that fish techniques you’re lacking in. Personally I try to book a guide once a year to learn something from the guide. Be sure and ask questions while out with the guide. If your only focus while fixing with someone else is catching fish then you’re not going to learn much. As a good rule you always want to fish with someone that’s a better angler than yourself.

Bryan Thrift talks about using crank baits that only dive to the depth of the top of brush piles in a video here at BU. Sorry but I don’t remember which one.
