Best cold water bait
My favorite smallmouth bait in cold water is the Silver Buddy or any brand of blade bait. Whenever the water temp dips into the 40's. I think the best version of this bait is the Bass Pro Shops blade bait. For some reason, gold is my number one choice on color.

There's Ice already where you are? What part of the country to you live?
In North western Pennsylvania. No ice yet but the reservoir is being drawn down to winter pool. The docks are probably on land. The road to the launch has no winter maintenance because of snowmobiles. We just got that snowstorm so I’m guessing I’m done till spring. The river would be my only option now.
We are going to film some ice fishing this year. Looks fun. I've never done it. Paul Mueller is going to teach us how to catch tons of smallies under the ice.
We will be releasing a bunch of Bass University seminars over the winter. I'll be trying to pick up some tricks over the winter.
It’s definitely fun and for the most part the only fishing there is. I haven’t caught any smallies thru ice yet. Same body of water that get drawn down is where I fish. No motorized vehicles allowed and everything we fish is down hill and on the other bank. It’s ok until you gotta walk back up the hill. Haha. Don’t really get to search just kinda drill some holes and hope for the best. We do get into some big pike ,walleye, and perch. I did have a couple buddies catch some smallies early under the ice. I just never made it out then. I wait till there’s at least 5” before I go. I don’t like swimming in 75 degree water let alone 35. Haha
Hahaha. You won't last long in 35 degree water. Be safe and good luck on the ice. It won't be long now.

For spotted bass, I throw a 3-4" swimbait around main lake points and humps.

Very disappointed there is none or little on Small Mouth fishing! Over the years I have learnt to dislike large mouth fishing do to some of the culture that surrounds it! I challenge any of you avid large mouth fisherman to come fish the harder bass to catch up here in the great north! I wish you guys could get some of the Northern pros and Canadian pro to do some topics on Small Mouth!
