I use a double uni-knot to tie all my main to leader lines. It's small and compact. I have micro guides on all my custom built rods and haven't had an issue yet.

I agree with ZamBam on the bites. Sometimes there is a distinct "thump". Sometimes there is just a little "tick" I've even seen my line jump several times as if the fish is hammering my worm trying to kill it. I will usually lower my rod and watch my line. If it's moving I'll set the hook. If it isn't, I'll reel up the slack and feel for the weight of the fish before setting the hook. The fish on my lake tend to swim toward you so if I feel like I've lost contact with the bottom, I'll reel up slack and set the hook as well. Those 3 scenarios work for me. I've learned there is no wrong or right absolutes. It's generally whatever works for you.

It depends on what technique you are using. You don't want a pool cue rod to fish finesse baits. Nor do you want a buggy whip to fish a big jig. For me, I prefer a medium action rod with a fast to moderate tip for spinning gear, most often 7'. For casting I generally use a medium or medium heavy rod with a fast tip anywhere from 6'6" to 7'3". These rods will handle most any bait I want to throw. I really like the BPS Pro Qualifier 2 reels. They come in 3 gear ratios, 5.6, 6.8, and 7.5.

Hi there! Just saw your post I've been building now for about 3 years I don't do fancy stuff I put my time and effort into trying to make an awesome working rod. I'd be glad to try and answer any of your questions.
