Jigs and line choice

JigNpig - sophomore

Hi guys,

I am tying to decide on a line type for an all around jig rod. I am torn between the advantages of braid and fluoro. I am weary in the slackline bite detection of braid, but the cost of re-spooling fluoro is so high. I have used both for several seasons, and lean towards fluoro as the overall better performer. This season, in hopes of saving some cash, I have order Yo zuri hybrid 12 and 15 lbs for my jig setup, instead of fluorocarbon.

Is it more advantageous sticking to braid/leader, even with the decrease in slack line sensitivity, or will the YZ hybrid work just as well ? I'm usually throwing 1/2 ounce jigs, mix of rock, wood, grass pretty evenly.

thank you

I also can't live with the high cost and incredibly short spool life of 100% fluoro. I use 30# (or higher) Spiderwire fluorobraid for jigs; it's a sinking braid , small diameter (equal to 10# mono) for low visibility and long casts. I usually use a fluoro leader as well for an abrasion assist. Braid is very cost effective. Can fish the braid multiple seasons, then just reverse it on the spool for added life. Regarding the slackline bite issue, that's why they say 'tightlines'. If you want to stay with fluoro try the decent performer, lower cost Yozuri fluoro.

Thanks for the reply ! I have been eye-ing the spinderwire sinking braid for a little while now. I switched from PP to their 8 carrier, and am now using 832. I'll give the sinking braid a shot and see how it does. Thanks again

A lot of the time I fish braid with a flouro leader. This accomplishes a lot of great stuff. Braid is expensive but lasts a long time. You can usually spool up once and it gets you through the season. Use a flouro leader. One 100 yard spool of flouro will supply you with enough leaders to get through a season in a lot of cases. Hi Pete! Do you remember the 10 lb class Spring fish you caught on a wacky senko off Stump Pt? I was with you that day a few years back. You caught it on "old 6 lb test line (fluoro?) on a broken spinning reel". Fluoro certainly worked for you that day! But I won't use it as a main line. To me it's akin to using a strand of fiberglass for fishing line. I use braid/fluoro on most of my outfits and sprinkle in some copoly from Maxima, Sunline, or Gamma where braid/fluoro does not work. If I need a sinking line I use TUF, 832, or Fluorobraid with a fluoro leader. After 10+ years I gave up trying to make fluorocarbon work as a main line. Initially braid does cost the same as fluoro, but it lasts all season, then I reverse it for a second season, so it is much more cost effective. Yes, I am signed up as a Rapala VIP. Prices, however, appear higher than TackleWarehouse's. Thanks for your message!

Hey Pat, I sure do remember that fish. That still stands as the biggest fish to ever come in my boat from the flats. I still think it was a 10 pounder. Truely awesome fish. It was a sunny, cold April day.

The VIP process has changed a bit. I see where they are asking for a code now. I'll get this process figured out and post here what the proceedure is.
